What Are Dermal Fillers?
Many dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps maintain skin volume and hydration. When injected into specific areas, dermal fillers can plump up sagging skin, smooth out wrinkles and fine lines, and restore youthful contours to the face. Other materials are used for dermal fillers like poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), each of which is biocompatible.
How Do Injectable Fillers Work?
Injectable fillers work differently based on their composition. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, for instance, fill the area with their gel-like volume and can help draw moisture to the treatment area. Biostimulating injectables like Sculptra and Radiesse can encourage the body’s collagen production processes, leading to long-lasting results that develop gradually. These products not only address wrinkles and loss of volume but also help enhance the skin’s overall structure and firmness.
What Areas Can Be Treated with Dermal Fillers?
Enhancing the cheeks can restore youthful volume and create a more balanced facial structure. Filler treatments specifically designed for this area can lift and define the cheekbones, offering a natural-looking and refreshed appearance.
Addressing hollows and shadows under the eyes can brighten the face and reduce the appearance of tiredness. Dermal fillers under the eyes are effective at rejuvenating this delicate area, leading to a more rested and vibrant look.
Reshaping these structures can improve side profile and decrease the appearance of jowls. These products can also strengthen a weak chin and subtly adjust the shape of the nose without surgery.
Fuller, more defined lips can enhance the harmony of facial features and contribute to a youthful appearance. Filler treatments can augment lip volume and shape, providing natural-looking results that complement the individual’s facial structure.
Often referred to as smile lines, nasolabial folds are the lines seen from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Marionette lines are those lines below each corner of the mouth that can significantly add age to one’s face. Fillers can easily fill in the lost volume of these lines and instantly take off years from the face restoring a soft, youthful, and natural look to the face.
Why Choose Dermal Fillers?
They Can Offer Immediate Results
Many injectable fillers provide instant enhancement, so you don’t have to wait a long time to see changes. If you are looking for a quick change for an upcoming event, dermal filler injections could be the right option.
They Look and Feel Natural
Advancements in cosmetic fillers have enabled a more natural look and feel with formulations that closely mimic the body’s own natural substances. Patients can maintain their normal facial expressions and movements and enjoy a rejuvenated appearance without the tell-tale signs of cosmetic interventions.
They Can Improve Your Skin’s Texture
Facial fillers not only fill in wrinkles and add volume but also improve the texture of the skin. Many fillers can help revitalize the skin, give it improved elasticity, and make the surface smoother and more youthful.
They Are Long-Lasting
Dermal fillers offer long-lasting results, allowing patients to enjoy their enhanced appearance for several months or even a couple of years, depending on the type of product used. This durability provides a lasting impact while still allowing for adjustments over time as needed.
Our Types of Dermal Fillers
Restylane
The Restylane line of injectable fillers is made with hyaluronic acid. Restylane uses two different technologies: NASHA® Technology and XpresHAn Technology™. NASHA creates firmer gels that are perfect for lifting and adding structure, while XpresHAn Technology produces softer, more flexible gels that move naturally with your facial expressions. Together, these innovations make Restylane fillers adaptable, precise, and long-lasting—helping you look refreshed without losing what makes you, you.
- Restylane Kysse: Restylane Kysse is a lip filler used to add volume, definition, and softness while maintaining natural movement.
- Restylane Lyft: Restylane Lyft provides structure and volume to areas that could use more lift, such as the cheeks, midface, and even hands.
- Restylane Defyne: For deeper lines and wrinkles, Restylane Defyne smooths and softens while allowing natural movement. It works particularly well for laugh lines and folds.
- Restylane Contour: Specifically crafted for cheek enhancement, Restylane Contour delivers soft, natural-looking volume to the midface. Its smooth texture allows for subtle shaping and definition without appearing overfilled.
- Restylane Refyne: Restylane Refyne focuses on treating moderate wrinkles and folds with a soft, flexible formula. As part of the XpresHAn line, it blends seamlessly into the skin.
- Restylane and Restylane-L: Restylane, the original product in the line, is versatile enough to address wrinkles and lack of volume across various facial areas. Restylane-L incorporates lidocaine for added comfort during treatment.
- Restylane Silk: Ideal for delicate enhancements, Restylane Silk is perfect for smoothing fine lines around the lips and adding subtle volume.
- Restylane Eyelight: If you’re struggling with under-eye hollows, Restylane Eyelight is an under-eye filler that restores volume and brightness to this delicate area.
The RHA Collection
The RHA Collection is the first line of dermal fillers formulated to adapt to the dynamic movements of the face, providing results that look natural both at rest and in motion. Made with Resilient Hyaluronic Acid (RHA), this collection preserves the natural structure of hyaluronic acid for a smoother, longer-lasting outcome.
- RHA Redensity™: Perfect for fine lines around the mouth, RHA Redensity™ smooths delicate wrinkles. Its lightweight formulation is ideal for areas that need precise refinement and soft enhancement.
- RHA 2: Designed for moderate dynamic wrinkles, RHA 2 smooths lines around the mouth and lips with a soft, flexible feel.
- RHA 3: RHA 3 provides more support for deeper wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial lines. It balances structure and flexibility for smoother, natural-looking results that move effortlessly with your facial expressions.
- RHA 4: For areas that need volume and definition, RHA 4 offers deeper structural support.
Radiesse®
Radiesse offers both immediate volume and long-term benefits. It is made from calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres, a biocompatible material that works to restore volume while encouraging natural collagen production. Once injected, Radiesse provides instant structure to areas experiencing volume loss, such as the cheeks, jawline, and hands. Over time, the CaHA particles stimulate your body’s collagen production, strengthening and revitalizing the skin’s foundation. Radiesse is particularly effective for deep lines, facial contouring, and areas where more robust support is needed.
Sculptra®
Sculptra is a collagen-stimulating filler that works gradually to restore volume and improve skin structure over time. Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biodegradable substance that stimulates the body’s natural collagen production. This treatment is used for facial volume loss, particularly in the nasolabial folds. Instead of delivering instant results, Sculptra works beneath the skin over several weeks to rebuild collagen, resulting in gradual, natural-looking rejuvenation.
Preparing for Dermal Fillers
Before your facial filler appointment, avoid blood-thinning medications or supplements like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, or vitamin E to prevent excessive bruising. Drinking alcohol 24 to 48 hours before or after the treatment may also increase bruising. If you’re prone to cold sores, let us know ahead of time—we may recommend antiviral medication to prevent a flare-up. Arrive at your appointment with skin that is free of makeup or skincare products so we can prepare the treatment area properly.
What to Expect on the Day of Your Appointment
On the day of your treatment, we’ll discuss your goals and review the areas to be treated. Once you’re comfortable with the plan, the area will be cleaned and a topical numbing cream may be applied. Most fillers also contain lidocaine, which helps make the process more comfortable. Using a fine needle or cannula, we’ll inject the filler at several different points for even distribution. You may feel slight pressure or a poke with each injection, but these sensations are brief. The treatment usually takes less than an hour.
How to Care for Your Skin After Dermal Fillers
After dermal filler treatments with hyaluronic acid filler, avoid touching, massaging, or applying pressure to the treated areas to allow the filler to settle properly. With Sculptra, you will be instructed to massage the area several times per day. Skip intense workouts, saunas, and hot tubs for the first 48 hours since heat and increased blood flow can lead to swelling or bruising. Keep your head slightly elevated when resting. Be sure to stay hydrated and protect your skin with sunscreen and a light moisturizer. If you notice any concerns, let us know right away so we can address them promptly.
FAQs About Dermal Fillers
Who Is a Good Candidate for Filler?
Anyone seeking to address volume loss, fine lines, or facial asymmetry without surgery.
How Long Do Cosmetic Fillers Last?
The longevity of dermal fillers varies depending on the type of filler. Most fillers last from 6 to 18 months. Individual factors such as metabolism, the area treated, and lifestyle can affect how long the results last.
How Soon Will I See Results From Dermal Fillers?
With filler treatments, you’ll notice results almost immediately after the injections. The treated areas will appear fuller and more contoured, although mild swelling or slight bruising may temporarily mask the final outcome. Over the next few days, the swelling will subside, and the filler will settle naturally into place. With Sculptra, it can take two or three treatments to see noticeable results.
What’s the Difference Between Dermal Fillers and Botox?
While both treatments are popular for facial rejuvenation, dermal fillers, and Botox® work in very different ways. Dermal fillers, such as hyaluronic acid-based, restore lost volume, smooth deeper lines, and enhance facial features like the lips, cheeks, or jawline. Botox is a neuromodulator that temporarily relaxes the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles on the forehead or around the eyes. Sometimes the two types of injectables are combined.
How Much Do Dermal Fillers Cost?
The cost of dermal fillers can vary depending on the type of filler used, the treatment area, and how many syringes are needed to achieve your desired results. During your consultation, we’ll discuss your goals and provide a personalized plan that includes an accurate estimate of costs. Always invest in a qualified and experienced provider who offers professional injections.
