Can Neuromodulators Help Prevent Wrinkles? What You Should Know

Fold a piece of paper along the same line often enough, and it retains that crease even after you flatten it back out. Your skin behaves similarly.

Every time a facial muscle contracts, whether from a smile, a squint or a furrowed brow, it presses a temporary line into the skin above it.

At first, that line disappears the moment your face relaxes. But repeat the motion for years, and the crease starts to stay behind even when the muscle stops moving. What was once a fleeting expression line becomes a wrinkle on display all day.

At Balle Bliss Luxury Medical Spa in Cypress, TX, Dr. Guljeet K. Sohal and her team see this transition often, and they also see how effectively it can be interrupted before it worsens. Neuromodulators, most commonly known by the brand names Botox and Dysport, are increasingly used not only to treat wrinkles that have already formed, but to keep new ones from settling in.

Dynamic Lines vs. the Wrinkles They Leave Behind

We call a wrinkle that only shows up when you make an expression a dynamic wrinkle. Once a line stays visible even after your face relaxes, it’s considered static. The change occurs because of a muscle contracting the same way, thousands of times, until the skin above it can no longer bounce back on its own.

Using a preventative neuromodulator treatment during this window can delay the process of a dynamic line becoming static. By softening muscle activity while lines are still dynamic, you can slow or stop the process that turns a passing expression into a permanent one.

We’re Seeing a Shift in Who Is Starting Treatment

Neuromodulator injections have held their position as the most performed minimally invasive treatment in the United States for years, with nearly 9.9 million procedures reported in 2024 alone, a 4 percent increase over the previous year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Patients between 40 and 54 still account for the largest share of that number, but ASPS reporting has also shown double-digit growth among patients in their 20s and 30s, a trend often called “prejuvenation.”

We see that shift in consultations at Balle Bliss too, where more patients now start the conversation by asking how to stay ahead of a line rather than how to treat one.

How Do Neuromodulators Help Prevent a Wrinkle From Forming?

Every facial muscle movement starts with a chemical messenger called acetylcholine, which nerve endings release to tell the muscle fibers to contract. Neuromodulators work upstream of the movement itself. Once injected, they block the release of that messenger at the specific nerve endings feeding the treated muscle, so the contraction signal never reaches the muscle.

Without that signal, the muscle stays in a relaxed state. And a muscle that isn’t moving can’t press a crease into the skin above it. Sensation stays completely normal while the treatment is active, and surrounding muscles keep working as usual. Over the coming months, the targeted muscle gradually regains its normal signaling, so the effects fade and muscle activity returns to its typical level.

This treatment has more than two decades of clinical use. Botox first received FDA approval for glabellar lines, the vertical furrows between the eyebrows, in 2002, and its safety profile has only been reinforced by the millions of treatments performed since. Dysport followed with its own FDA approval in 2009 and works through the same acetylcholine-blocking mechanism, though it disperses slightly more within the muscle once injected.

What Wrinkle Prevention Looks Like at Balle Bliss

Preventative treatment isn’t simply a smaller version of a standard treatment plan. It calls for a provider who understands exactly how much muscle activity is enough to soften lines without erasing the movement that makes an expression look natural.

Dr. Sohal, a board-certified physician injector with nearly two decades of experience exclusively in aesthetics, oversees every neuromodulator treatment at Balle Bliss and has earned the title of Master Injector, training other providers in the field. For younger patients specifically, that expertise typically translates into fewer units placed with more restraint, calibrated to muscle patterns that haven’t yet developed the deeper activity seen in older patients.

Is Preventative Botox Treatment Right For You?

There is no single age at which preventative neuromodulator treatment becomes appropriate. These are a few signs you may be ready:

  • Your expression lines take a little longer to fade than they used to
  • You have a family history of early wrinkling
  • You’ve received heavy sun exposure over the years
  • You have a naturally expressive face that moves often and with intensity

None of these are requirements. They are starting points for a discussion with a provider who can assess your specific muscle activity patterns and tell you what treatment, if any, makes sense right now.

Wrinkle Prevention Works Best as Part of a Larger Plan

Neuromodulators target muscle movement, while volume loss and skin texture call for a different approach. Patients focused on facial volume and contouring may pair neuromodulator treatment with dermal fillers, while those building a long-term skin health routine often add medical-grade skincare into their plan. The right combination must be personalized to your needs, which is why treatment planning at Balle Bliss starts from a conversation rather than a generic template.

Once a wrinkle sets into your skin at rest, it becomes much harder to treat than it was to prevent. Neuromodulators help you stay ahead of that process, whether you’re just starting to notice a line that lingers or want to protect the skin you have now.
